How long did the musical take to film?

- We had 14 days, 14 songs, which once again, you have to do quotation marks because some of them are half songs,

three represses on some songs, and variations on another.

But a handful of full-blown musical numbers with amazing choreography and spectacular dancing by the two of you.

So we had a buffer of days because it was gonna be extra.

And as the ballooning of the budget happened, we kept losing days on the schedule.

And we shot this on a regular schedule for two episodes, which is why you guys were so tired and the entire thing sometimes falls into a blur because there's never been as intense a schedule on our show as there was during this musical.

And you guys know that.

I mean, you guys were actually out rehearsing in dance studios with Paul Becker somewhere else while we were off shooting and prepping and doing all that stuff.

So it was, it was a 14-day shoot for a two-hour musical, which, you know, to be fair, two hours in TV time, including commercials.

So, you know, it's a 86 minutes, is that what it is?

- What was it we changed the title to Psych the musical aka Steve's Opus?

- Oh, yes.

- But it wasn't my Opus.

It was, I mean, this is the most of everybody pitching in that this show has ever put together because without you being able to sing and dance and do all these moves and to put this whole story together.

And Richard Coleman, who is our AD, who had to schedule this thing.

And everyone, Chris Hensey came up for a month and a half and stayed the whole time while he's got, you know, a whole other business going on.

It was everybody really just saying, all right, we're going to be exhausted at the end of this.

And this is probably going to be one of the most fun things that we do in the run of the show.

- And it absolutely was.

And I think you're being really kind about everybody.

And yeah, I get that.

But I have to say, I mean, for people who you all, I'm sure, you know, you know the musical, you probably know some of the stories behind the musical.

But this was all Steve, like music, every, like every piece of it.

I am still blown away.

It's one thing to do a musical episode of something that's very cool.

And you bring musicians in and you bring all the people in.

You can do all of it.

And you did all of it, all of it.

So I wrote the songs on my little acoustic guitar.

And then I brought them into our composers and Adam Cohen, who you guys referred to it and Detroit as Andy Cohen.

We're just fine because it made it sound like the dude from Bravo, who's doing the afro show on below deck was actually sitting in a room with me writing songs,

which actually made me feel like I was much cooler.

- But, well, I mean, you know, and so Adam and I wrote the songs.

John did a lot of the scoring, who's our other composer, but John was, I didn't send a lot of stuff to John, because he's in England, and so Adam was closer.

And a lot of this stuff I brought, I brought these sort of very rough, simple versions on acoustic guitar.

And I was like, well, how about we make this a thousand times better.

And so I was able to put my words and my music and make what became the song.

So it was very much a collaboration there.

And the fact that, you know, that I could say, hey, I want to write a song called "Jumaked Inspector" and I want it to feel like it's from the little mermaid is and Adam's all, oh, like this.

And they're, and we're off and running.

So it was a really fun, it was a really fun thing to do.

I mean, it's like a synchronic moment in the background is next to my galvan poster is, I'm just talking galvan today, is a frame in piece of music from Alan Menken,

who wrote little mermaid, who wrote many of the great songs of the classic of the golden era of Disney hand drawn animation, the second,

I guess the second golden era, but yes.

And, and by the way, Maggie, I don't know if you knew this, but when I set out to write this musical, I said, here's what's happening.

We're getting closer to the end of this show.

And I need to do something that's going to catapult Tim Almondson to his next job.

And I thought, why don't I have him sing and dance and then someone will write a show that fits that perfectly and give him the opportunity to fly across the pond and drink in a lot of pubs overseas and mission accomplished.

So did the cast have to take singing lessons or is everyone just that talented?

I don't know that we took singing lessons necessarily, but we, you know, it was a really professional, I mean, we went into the Capitol Records building in Hollywood in a recording studio to record this stuff.

And I get to say Tim, you sort of, I go with Steve was saying, like, did you know, I know you knew you could sing.

I knew you knew you were talented this way, but like, did this not just really open up something in your whole like, like, oh, I'm done.

I hadn't done an actual musical since high school, which was long, long, long before we started.

I remember that you sang that.

When we were in the, in Capitol Records and not just any studio, Frank Sinatra's studio.

Oh, and Frank Sinatra's studio.

Yeah, no pressure.

So I had never, I had not, and I always say with Galavant, eight comedy musical.

If you haven't seen Galavant, what is wrong with you?

That I hadn't done anything since high school until then I go, oh, wait, no, of course I did.

It was psyched the musical, which Steve honest to God, this, the experience on the show shooting this episode was maybe really just go like, oh, wait, I'd forgotten how much I love singing.

We need this to be a part of my life.

So you really did catapult the rest of my career and then that thing that happened, it was in all the papers sort of took away my singing voice.

So, which I mean, I think temporarily, like the little mermaid lost her singing voice for some time, but at the end, she got it back.

So we're just in act two of the little mermaid.

But it was pretty amazing when we found out we were going to be down there and we actually were in we're in two different spaces and they're just these classic recording studios,

I always say when you have your own television show listeners that make sure you get a chance to do something that like that, something that's been a dream of wishful film that,

And it's like, we literally talked about it in the pilot.

And then it was just like, okay, whenever I have the time, I'll write these songs.

And it only took six years.

So that was the that was the plan.

But it was everybody was ready.

And you know, and everybody delivered in such in such a big way.

And seeing Anthony Repcomman, Repcomman, who you broke or Anthony, and I'm saying hello to him and going, I'm going to go warm up, I'm like, warm up.

And I know it like he had his own warm because he's a professional singer.

So prior to getting galavant, which I still, I mean, I actually had to sing for Alan Mankin for the audition, which was terrifying.

So I'd take into my voice lessons prior to that and worked up a song.

We're basically doing "Javair."

It's my, um, it's my late-miss moment.

"Javair" was my white well for musicals, so that was the role I've always wanted to play, but it's still too high for me, so I'm working on my voice.

So by saying a song from Lemais, I sang "Stars," which is "Javair's Big Song" from my audition for galavant, and not really just not really having any, all these musicals, these are the same thing.

So I cut to, first, we can the recording studio in Bristol, and I'm recording my big, my opening big number for, for galavant, and Alan Mankin's on the other.

I can see, like, Alan's in the studio and through the glass, and all the producers there, and I can't hit the note, and just flop sweat.

And then Alan comes in into the booth with me, and it's literally trying to teach me how to sing.

I mean, it's trying to teach me technique in like four minutes.

I'm like, they're going to realize I don't know what I'm doing.

I'm about to get fired.

And then we went on, I think we went on, and it's like, I swear, like, I was never going to let that happen to me again.

So got home on a hiatus, immediately got a proper vocal sting and teacher, and started taking lessons, pretty hard core, which I'm trying to get back to right now.

I was putting together all the songs.

I was trying to make sure I had songs for everybody and that there was going to be a way to keep the story moving with all that stuff.

And he said something like, "Not me."

I don't think he thought I was serious because ever since then he's always going, "Oh, so I didn't get to sing."

And I thought that he just didn't want to sing.

And so I didn't write any, I just wrote the bit.
