Putting the Quality in Quality Education
Description
Welcome to the second episode of the Human Hive podcast, where we're exploring the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 4 - Quality Education.
Seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been established by the United Nations, and are humanity’s collective call-to-action to solve the most pressing problems facing people and the planet today.
In this episode we're joined by Dr Ian Cunningham (a pioneer in the field of self-managed learning), young people from our flagship Hive School in the Dominican Republic, and members of our Human Hive global community, to explore what quality education truly means and how we can make a difference for achieving this vital SDG.
Dr Ian Cunningham is the founder of the Self Managed Learning College in Brighton, a unique organisation that supports young people aged 9-16 in managing their own learning. The College provides a learning community that enables young people to learn to lead a good life. There are no classrooms, no formal lessons, no imposed timetables and freedom for young people to learn whatever they want and in any way that they want.

What can you look forward to hearing in this episode?
"A good education is one where it doesn't necessarily have to be the same for everyone." - Tepenga (Hive School student, age 11)
" At the moment, the mainstream education system require students to cram for stressful high stakes examinations, which many of them fail. And even those who pass quickly forget the vast majority of the curriculum. Once you leave school there isn't usually a teacher there to tell you what to do, when, how and so on... So to me, quality education is one which teaches people how to teach themselves - how to be confident, effective, self-directed learners." - Dr James Mannion (Director of Rethinking Education)
