Another delicious mystery from Fred Vargas.
So delighted that Commissaire Adamsberg is back. I couldn't wait for the translation into English, so I'm slowly making my way through Fred Vargas's lovely prose and marvelous invention. And strangely, suddenly recluse spiders are popping up everywhere around me. Coincidence?
Sublime
Been a while since my last "worth it" thriller read... and even though im reading as FLE student (soo many words to look up), commissaire Adamsberg and the recluse kept me hanging till the very end. It has the right doses of all elements of a good thriller
Fred Vargas at her best
Fred Vargas at her best. Her novel is full of suspense, full of humor, beautifully written in a style that is both original and extremely powerful. You always feel like a friend of yours left when you close the book knowing that you will not meet Adamsberg for a few years.
Five Stars
Un très bon livre !
Best yet
I must say that I haven't read one of the Vargas rompols that I didn't like, and I think I have read them all. The last one I read always seems to be the best one ( even when it's re-read later) and that is the case with this one. There's always something interesting in the development of the old characters and in the invention of the new ones. Her treatment of the perpetrators often highlights the ambiguity of their actions: this is particularly well done in this case. It really shows what ugly stepsisters Justice and Vengeance are to Mercy. The language is an important part of good writing and in the Vargas books some things depend on the particular nuance of the word used so read it in the French version if possible (traduttore; traditore.)
