Queensland Families Struggle with Rising Costs
Update: 2025-12-01
Description
Single parents and low-income families in Queensland are grappling with a dire Christmas due to escalating living costs. A new report by QCOSS reveals that families with children are disproportionately affected, with a single parent of two children facing a weekly budget shortfall of $227. The report, titled Living Affordability in Queensland 2025, found that four out of five families cant afford a basic standard of living, spending up to 48% of their income on housing. Even dual-income families are falling short by over $100 weekly. High housing costs, rising electricity bills, and limited access to healthcare are forcing impossible choices. The situation is exacerbated by increasing house prices, with median house prices in Brisbane nearing $1 million and regional Queensland at $779,000. QCOSS urges the Queensland government to develop a Families Strategy to ensure fair access to health, education, and housing, as the population is projected to grow by another million in the next decade.
