Description

For generations, living openly as a gay person in the United States was difficult, and often dangerous. But there's been a dramatic change in public attitudes toward gay people. This week, we explore one of the most striking transformations of public attitude ever recorded. And we consider whether the strategies used by gay rights activists hold lessons for other groups seeking change.

I wonder if the otherwise privileged position of gay men contributed to the change. I imagine a lot of gay men wielding a lot of power and being influential and rich or otherwise high on the hierarchy - CEOs, politicians, doctors, lawyers, academics etc. I feel like this is the component that other oppressed groups are missing to break through, ie women or visible minorities. So to win more influence would lead to be advances in the rights and fair treatment of those groups. but to win this influence you need said rights and fair treatment... Great episode, thank you for all your work. long live reason, science and love!

This was most likely one of Hidden Brain's most commented and discussed episodes. It now has 5 comments. My comments were censored on this episode as well as many others, so I'll try to reiterate my view again. There has been a dramatic decline in the moral fabric of our society. There are presumptions and statements made in this episode which are very biased and pushing the agenda even further. The episode starts off pitting religion, specifically Christianity, against the gay rights movement. They are in opposition to one another, but Christians don't hate homosexuals and they take soundbites from awful people to represent the religion. Christians recognize homosexuality to be a sin, however, that doesn't mean that Orthodox Christians do not tolerate homosexuals. The issue with the gay rights movement is that it doesn't just want equal rights, but wants everyone, regardless of their conscience, to celebrate their lifestyle. The gay rights movement wants to infringe on religious freed

To sum it all up, yes, there has been an extreme decline in the moral fabric of our society. There are presumptions and statements in this episode which are grossly misleading and some are outright false. NPRs's Leftist agenda is crystal clear and journalism is dead. And no, the civil rights movement is not like the gay rights movement and neither are like the women's rights movement. To try and equate them is abhorrent dishonesty about biology.

I think she was talking mainly about the "rate of change" seen on these issues

why have opinions about homosexuality changed so fast while other things (women's rights, racism, ageism, body size) haven't? I believe it's because it's easy for people to see gender and age and race and body size. it's easier to make a judgement about someone based on their appearance than about their lifestyle/choices (not saying homosexuality is a choice, although some think it is).
