In today's episode, we're talking about THE FOUNDING Gay & Lesbian Latinos Unidos Archives. We'll discuss why the organizers, Maria Garcia and Elias Naranjo were interested in documenting the GLLU story.
We begin with Maria Garcia: Maria Celeste Garcia (she/they) is a Queer Latine from Los Angeles (tongva/gabrielino land) and they currently work at Rainbow Labs as the Program Manager where they develop and streamline a series of after-school programming seeking to mentor and support underserved LGBTQIA+ youth.
Maria graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in Sociology and a minor in LGBTQS+ studies. She has experience providing LGBTQIA+ curriculum to schools, students, faculty, and parents.
They are passionate about social justice and bringing queer education to Latine communities and creating opportunities for healing for queer and transgender individuals. She believes in community-led activism and continues her work by educating those around her about the intersections of injustice.
Elías Naranjo (he/him) is a trans-masculine, queer, and Latinx. He is first generation Peruvian & Mexican. Currently works as an Outreach Coordinator for a non-profit that runs summer camps for HIV-affected youth and transgender youth.
