Description

On Aug. 26, 1874 — 151 years ago — 16 Black men were dragged from a Tennessee jail by a white mob. Five were killed outright, others wounded, and a few escaped. Despite national headlines, intimidation in court led to acquittals and no convictions. The Trenton Massacre remains a stark reminder of how fragile Black freedom was in the Reconstruction South.
