Repeat: Recognizing Privilege When Dating A Person Of Color #104
Description
We’ve spoken about interracial relationships with Ian Underwood on one of our earlier podcasts (shoutout to Ian!). But what about privilege when dating someone who is of a different color? That has to come into play at some point. After all, in the United States, it can be a very polarizing climate even in 2018 with all generations when ignorance shows its ugly face. So, who is to change and when?
Considering the various races and cultures that come with it in this country, most have to adapt to a European-set structure which had been forced upon all people of color. This is why most wear suits for interviews instead of daishikis. This is why dreadlocks are frowned upon at many places of work yet straightened hair is a standard. This is why “Black” sounding names are less likely to have a call-back for a job interview. But what about dating? When a White person dates a person of color, what is it they should have to understand? When should they know when to speak up and when to stay quiet for their loved ones?
Like in Black Panther, when M’Baku had to shut Agent Freeman up for speaking out of turn, a lesson was learned. The privilege of pretending to know everything when in a space where you know nothing is what can divide people. Living in that bubble and being unaware of what culturally makes us unique can break up relationships. Are there options you can choose to do in order to rectify? Absolutely! So, let’s talk about that! Subscribe and contact us at 602-786-9998 to give your opinion! Or reply in the comments section of this website or on Facebook! Either way, connect!
