Description

Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer, unveiled its autonomous vehicle plans at its first Autonomy and AI Day. The company introduced a custom chip, car computer, and new AI models to bring advanced autonomous features to its upcoming vehicles. Rivian also announced Autonomy Plus, a subscription service for continuously expanding capabilities, priced at $2,500 or $49.99 per month. Despite a stock drop due to OpenAIs AI announcement, Rivians CEO emphasized AIs transformative power. A near-future software update will enable hands-free driving on over 3.5 million miles of North American roads. Rivian plans to use lidar and radar sensors for Level Four fully automated driving, unlike Tesla. The companys autonomous vehicle aspirations are separate from its joint venture with Volkswagen, as it faces pressure to demonstrate growth potential and expand its customer base amid slowing U.S. EV sales and international competition.
