When the late, great Robin Williams stepped onto the set of Dead Poets Society in 1989, he found himself surrounded by a group of young actors who were just beginning their careers. Most were unknown at the time, but several—including Ethan Hawke, Josh Charles, and Robert Sean Leonard—would go on to become major stars. Under director Peter Weir’s guidance, the cast helped create one of the most emotionally resonant and influential films of the decade.

A Mentor On and Off the Screen

As the inspiring English teacher John Keating, Williams spent countless hours with the young cast during rehearsals and filming. His mix of humor, intensity, and generosity helped the rising actors find their characters and their confidence. Many later credited Williams for encouraging them, challenging them, and treating them as collaborators rather than newcomers. His presence on set made the experience feel less like a job and more like a genuine creative journey.

Robin Williams Praised Peter Weir’s Casting Choices

When the film was released, Williams publicly praised director Peter Weir’s remarkable eye for talent. He shared that he bonded with the students both on and off camera, forming friendships that carried on long after production wrapped. That sense of camaraderie ultimately helped give Dead Poets Society its enduring emotional impact. Upon release, the movie became a critical and commercial success, later earning four Oscar nominations and cementing its place in film history.
