S08 Berserk and the Beast of Darkness (Another version)
Update: 2024-07-31
Description
The popular dark fantasy manga and anime series Berserk is renowned for its grim, mature storytelling and dynamic characters. But perhaps the most complex and psychologically compelling character is the violent inner beast that takes control of protagonist Guts in his most desperate moments. In this character analysis podcast, we dive deep into the rich symbolic and philosophical dimensions of Guts’ inner beast of darkness.
Known simply as “The Beast”, this ferocious, semi-demonic entity lurks in the recesses of Guts’ mind, emerging to possess him in times of extreme rage, pain and suffering. We explore how The Beast represents Guts’ repressed childhood traumas and capacity for malevolence, acting as his unchained “id” seeking destruction and vengeance.
Drawing upon Jungian psychology and Freudian theory, we discuss how The Beast embodies Guts’ shadow self - his buried memories and emotions too painful and disturbing to confront. We also examine the intense internal struggle between Guts’ conscious ego and his animalistic id, which threatens to obliterate his sanity, identity and humanity.
