S1 E7: embarrassment is a social construct
Update: 2024-11-23
Description
embarrassment is learned, not innate. awkward moments breed discomfort only because of stories told -- not truths. the anxiety ruminating after each blush-worthy event stems from judgment of how ‘i should have behaved’ versus life as messy, unpredictable human experiencing. embarrassment is a social construct.
fears of not appearing ‘cool enough’, talking too loud or wearing the ‘wrong’ clothes have no basis in actual human limitation or flaw. they come from worrying about living up to unrealistic attitudes of peer approval and status seeking. discomfort is felt mainly due to beliefs of how ‘grown up’, ‘perfect’ or ‘cool’ one 'should' seem based on age -- not natural tendency towards embarrassment. it is conditioned, not instinctual.
why embrace vulnerability to embrace life fully when every eyebrow raised or whispered laugh could be interpreted as indictment of character? when every slip up becomes awful reminder of not meeting standards of false hierarchical 'cool'. the answer: because authentic living -- not fabricated personas -- nourishes the soul. weirdness, awkwardness and foolish mistakes included. they make beauty.
tools for reevaluating each blush-worthy moment: will this matter in a year? what insecurities fuel this discomfort rather than any truth? who benefits from my embarrassment and why do their judgments seem so significant? choosing to laugh at life’s absurdity versus blush at my un-coolness transforms the experience entirely. embracing embarrassment as natural part of being human -- not flaw to hide or excuse -- leads to living free. all socials —> https://linktr.ee/callmecrazypod
