Description

CW: Homophobic Slurs, Rape, Hate CrimesWriter: Gemma HarrisPerhaps you already know this story - or think you do. But as you’ll hear, what happened just outside a town in the midwest state of Wyoming on a chilly fall night in the late 1990s, had haunting parallels with coyote hanging. What started as a grisly warning would become the catalyst for a watershed movement nationwide. One that would see the LGBTQ community finally make a breakthrough when it came to breaking down bigotry and prejudice.Listener, if anything in today’s story has raised any issues for you, or if someone you know needs help, you can contact the LGBT National Hotline in the United States and Canada on 1 888 843 4564 for confidential support. The Brotherhood of Sleep

The Matthew Shepherd episode is proof that is spite of what you see on the news and the internet, there are more good people out there than bad.

Thank you always for doing these difficult and important cases. Not sure if I'm crying because of the brutality visited on Matt for such a petty, cruel reason, or in relief that other people remember.

thank you for remembering I was 10 years old when Matt was born, so I have vivid memories of this incident. I didn't know it then growing up in a young girl's body that I would grow up to come out was as a transgender male. When I did come out I remembered Matt and trust me it shaped my life even all those years later with fear and doubt. Lucky for me I had a wonderful support team and good friends, but everyone is not even close to that fortunate. Everytime someone remembers Matthew and many others like him including James and other types of hate crimes because being gay is certainly not the only thing certain people despise, it helps shine a light on just how much we really aren't any different in our day to day lives than anyone else. We feel, work, love, play, pay bills, and struggle to pay bills lol just like you. We also hurt and bleed like anyone else as well. Though I'm into my 50's now I still remember Matthew and his story and again I thank you for sharing it and James as wel
