雙浴黑白顯影液是利用顯影試藥的功能組成，將顯影主劑與顯影促進劑(鹼劑)分開成二道溶液使用，已曝光的黑白負片在A液(顯影主劑)中，將不產生金屬還原反應(弱酸)，或產生很少的金屬還原反應(微鹼)，在底片明膠層已經吸滿A液之後，將底片移置B液(顯影促進劑)中，此時開始快速產生還原反應，在高光部位A液會先行消耗完，而停止反應，但暗部因A液尚未用完，會持續作用。這樣的方式可以抑制高光的發展，增加暗部的細節。
