In this episode, I sit down with filmmaker and wild-horse advocate Ashley Avis—director, screenwriter, producer, and the founder of The Wild Beauty Foundation. Ashley’s work bridges artistry and advocacy, with films and documentaries that illuminate the connection between humans, horses, and the natural world.Ashley wrote, directed, and edited BLACK BEAUTY for Disney+, and is currently developing major studio projects including a reimagining of CITY OF ANGELS for Warner Bros. and AMERICAN WOLF for Apple with Appian Way. We talk about Ashley's work creating Black Beauty, which led her back into the world of horses. This also unleashed a passion to show the challenges wild horses are facing to the world with the award-winning documentary Wild Beauty: Mustang Spirit of the West, a 2023 Critics Choice Nominee. Ashley recently brought this work to Washington D.C., screening it for Members of Congress in support of H.R. 3656, The Wild Horse and Burro Protection Act—earning a Special Congressional Commendation for her advocacy.Ashley has now lent her talents and skills to The Lost Horse Campaign, which aims to raise awareness of horse slaughter in the United States. This campaign encourages everyone to take action to shut down the slaughter pipeline in the United States and better care for and protect horses. Ashley is the co-founder of Winterstone Pictures and lives in Los Angeles near the ocean with her husband and producing partner, Edward Winters, and their pup Whiskey. When she’s not working on set or in the editing room, she rescues horses and is writing her first children’s book. This conversation is an invitation to join the cause in fighting for the welfare of all horses.Connect with Ashley: www.ashleyavis.comwww.wildbeautyfoundation.orgwww.winterstonepictures.comWILD BEAUTY: MUSTANG SPIRIT OF THE WEST available nowhttps://youtu.be/2rVD43mFrjU
