Description

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle is stepping down from her position, according to an email she sent to staff, following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on July 13. “I take full responsibility for the security lapse,” Ms. Cheatle said in the email on July 23. Her resignation comes one day after she appeared before a congressional committee and was berated for hours by both Democrats and Republicans for the security failures.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have officially announced a bipartisan House task force to investigate the attempted assassination of former President Trump. “In response to bipartisan demands for answers, we are announcing a House Task Force made up of seven Republicans and six Democrats to thoroughly investigate the matter,” the two leaders said in a statement.

President Joe Biden will address the nation from the Oval Office on Wednesday evening on his decision to drop his 2024 reelection bid. President Biden posted on X that he would speak “on what lies ahead,” and how he will “finish the job for the American people.” His speech will be broadcast on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.
