Description
The ‘sermon on the mount’ as it’s affectionately called, is considered the first of five major discourses given by Jesus recorded in Matthew’s Gospel. Scholars debate whether this is a collection of sermons given in a summary form or if this is the totality of the sermon. Nevertheless, Matthew’s recording of it seeks to communicate a very clear message.
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished” (Matt 5:17-18).
If Matthew 1-4 is the ‘hope’ of the Kingdom of God, chapters 5-7 are the ‘how’ of the Kingdom of God. In it we come face to face with Jesus’ clearest teaching on Kingdom ethics; what it looks like to live as a disciple of Jesus, in God’s Kingdom under God’s power and presence.
