Originally implemented as a way to reduce the operating costs of running a store, self-service has evolved since its introduction over 15 years ago into an option that provides greater flexibility in the store running and customer engagement. From a consumer perspective, self-service is an expected feature from businesses, so much so that they demand it from many environments.
