Shingles Vaccine May Slow Dementia Progression
Update: 2025-12-03
Description
New research indicates that the shingles vaccine may slow dementia progression and reduce mortality in those already diagnosed, offering potential therapeutic benefits beyond prevention. A larger follow-up study found a twenty percent reduction in dementia diagnoses and nearly thirty percent decrease in dementia-related deaths among vaccinated individuals. The protective effects appeared stronger in women. While the study analyzed an older vaccine, the newer Shingrix vaccine may offer similar benefits, requiring further investigation.
