Sinkhole Swallows Boats, Homeless for Christmas
Update: 2025-12-23
Description
At four twenty AM, a massive sinkhole swallowed two narrowboats and left a third teetering on the edge of a one hundred sixty foot deep hole in the Llangollen Canal near Whitchurch in Shropshire. The canal bed collapsed, an embankment gave way, and water gushed into a nearby field, turning the area into a major emergency. Despite the chaos, no one was hurt, but the owner of one of the boats, Paul Stowe, is now homeless for Christmas. Subsidence expert Freya Chapman warns that other stretches of the two hundred fifty year old network could face the same risk, especially after dry summers followed by heavy rains. The Canal and River Trust is investigating the cause and planning a months long cleanup.
