- Welcome to The Gardner's World magazine, So Along Series.
00:01:51
The podcast that inspires you to grow more from seed.
00:01:54
(upbeat music)
00:01:56
Crunchy, bright and full of peppery flavour.
00:02:11
The radish is one of the quickest and easiest crops to grow.
00:02:14
Radishes offer a number of health benefits too, being rich in vitamin C and potassium, which can help lower blood pressure.
00:02:22
They're good for heart health, and the radish root contains antioxidants, plus they keep you hydrated because of their high water content and are packed with fibre.
00:02:32
My name is Sarah Edwards, pitch editor at BBC Gardner's World magazine, and I want to share my love and tips for growing the radish.
00:02:40
Salad radishes are the most popular type to grow.
00:02:47
There are a number of different varieties that come in varied shapes, such as the long slender root of radish trench breakfast, as well as radish rainbow mix with its different colours of red,
00:02:58
pink, yellow and white.
00:03:00
I've also grown an autumn harvesting radish, called radish watermelon, which has a white root that when cut reveals a pink centre and tastes more sweet and less spicy than some varieties.
00:03:13
Radishes can be grown in the ground, in containers, or as I did last summer on my allotment, in between rows of other vegetables such as garlic,
00:03:24
onions, peas or beans.
00:03:26
This into-sowing really maximises the growing space.
00:03:30
Just remember not to sow all the seeds at once as they are quick to crop, instead, so at weekly intervals, for a successful crop through the summer.
00:03:41
You can sow radish undercover in February for planting out in March, or start sowing direct in March in April with closh protection, depending on where you are in the country.
00:03:52
To sow, rake the soil to a fine tillth, removing any weeds or large stones, and create a drill.
00:04:03
I water this drill ahead of sowing the seeds, so that the seeds stick to the damp soil and stay in place, rather than being dislodged by watering immediately after sowing.
00:04:13
Spread the seeds as thin as possible in the drill, about three centimetres apart to help with needing less thinning as they grow.
00:04:22
Cover the seeds with a light dusting of soil, say one centimetres worth, mark the line of the drill so you know where the seeds have been sown.
00:04:30
The seedlings start to appear after seven to ten days.
00:04:33
When the leaves have started to form and they appear a bit stronger, I start to thin the seedlings.
00:04:39
And as they grow, it's important to keep the weeds at bay, as they will try to compete with the radishes for space and water.
00:04:47
I made the mistake of not keeping on top of weeding early on, which resulted in spending some time trying to work out what was a weed or radish seedling.
00:04:57
Keep watering, the roots regularly, so they form plump radish and to prevent splitting.
00:05:03
After about three to four weeks, the radishes should be ready to harvest.
00:05:08
Radish are best harvested when they're about two and a half centimetres or one inch in diameter.
00:05:18
If left to grow much bigger, then the taste of the radish can be bitter.
00:05:23
Sometimes the roots can fail to swell, and this can be caused by overcrowding or hot dry weather.
00:05:30
I now grow vertical vegetables next to them to offer some shade to the radishes, such as onions or peas, since they don't like being baked in the sun all day in the height of summer.
00:05:40
There is also a chance of flowering or bolting occurring in dry weather, so do keep watering the radish and remove any that produce flower stems unless you want to harvest the seeds.
00:05:50
Slugs and snails, and let's face it, we have plenty of those last summer, are also on the hunt, eating the little seedlings.
00:05:57
Last summer, I grew a variety of different radishes, including radish caro, a purple pink skinned white fleshed radish,
00:06:10
with a lovely peppery flavor, and radish white icicle, which has a sweet flavor, a great variety to sow later in summer, and harvesting to autumn is radish black Spanish round,
00:06:23
which has black skin and white flesh.
00:06:26
I've added thin slices of radish rainbow mix to broad beans and potato salad.
00:06:32
This radish looks particularly pretty in this salad, and I've created a vegetable side dish by roasting radish caro with garlic, olive oil, and seasoning.
00:06:43
If you like pickling, you can thinly slice the radish, make a brine by heating sugar and salt in water, and vinegar in a pan until dissolved.
00:06:53
Once cool, add the radish to the brine and store in a sterilized jar in the fridge for a week or so.
00:06:59
These pickled radishes add a picot zing to any burger.
00:07:03
Once an overlooked addition to a salad, I would encourage everyone to give growing radishes a go.
