Spokane's Playfair Race Course: A Racing Legacy
Update: 2025-12-25
Description
Spokanes Playfair Race Course, once a bustling hub of thoroughbred horse racing, hosted its final race in 2000. The grand oak grandstand, seating 3,000, was a sight to behold, located just a mile east of downtown. The track, initially part of the Interstate Fair, saw its heyday from 1901 to 2000, attracting millions of attendees. Despite betting bans, county fairs kept racing alive, nurturing local stars like Albert Johnson and Ruth Parton. The track reopened in 1935, hosting legendary races and producing champions like Joey and Lighted Way. However, attendance dwindled in the 1980s due to casinos and sports betting, leading to its closure in 2000. Today, a red fire hydrant and artifacts at the Northwest Museum serve as reminders of Spokanes racing glory. Checkout Solipillow.com
