Student Project: Who Are the Popular Nigerian Hip Hop Artists That We Hear So Little About?
Update: 2018-04-25
Description
In my podcast entitled 'Ears to Streets,' I welcome two Nigerian born individuals, Tobby Drillz and Wale "Lelo" Afolabi, to dicuss their opinions on why Nigerian hip hop artists have not reached the same level of success as their Afrobeats counterparts. Drillz is an Afro-fusion artist; while, Lelo is a musician and music producer/mix masterer. Both challenge what Western media considers "hip hop," citing current artists like Migos and Future. In addition, they identify that Afrobeats better resonates with Nigerian, while the Nigerian hip hop artists will resonate with both their older and younger communities due to language, something that American artists cannot do.
