Here are some of the themes that we find in the Mass readings for the Solemnity of Christ the King.
1st Reading – 2nd Samuel 5:1-3
- The tribes of Israel come to Hebron and meet David.
- Recalling the words of the Lord that he would be their shepherd and commander, they anoint David king of Israel.
Psalm – 122:1-5
- “Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.”
- Jerusalem is the city for the people of Israel, where resides the judgment seat for the house of David.
2nd Reading – Colossians 1:12-20
- We give thanks to the Father, who gave us his beloved Son, the image of the invisible God and the firstborn of all creation.
- He is the head of the body, the church, and he reconciles all things through the blood of his Cross.
Gospel – Luke 23:35-43
- Christ is mocked from the Cross, where the sign above his head reads, “This is the King of the Jews.”
- The good thief acknowledges Jesus who says to him, “Today you will be with me in Paradise.”
