I grew up in poverty with a single mother and an alcoholic father who was mostly absent. I never did well in school and dropped out in the 10th grade. I was married to an abusive man at 18, had a child at 19, and divorced at 20. I was arrested twice.

I could have easily given up on life, but I didn’t. I decided that I would not let my past define me. I went back to school, got my degree, and built a successful career. I now own my own home and live a comfortable life.

I am not ashamed of my past. I am proud of the person I have become. I know that I can help others who are struggling.  

I believe that everyone has the potential to overcome their challenges and achieve success. It doesn’t matter where you come from or what you have been through. If you are willing to work hard and never give up, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.
