Talking Culture: Nnenna Freelon, Going ‘Beneath the Skin of Sorrow’
Description
Welcome to Talking Culture! In this weekly interview series from 97.9 The Hill WCHL, you’ll hear from writers, performers, musicians and individuals involved in advancing and promoting cultural arts in our community.
This week, Aaron welcomes legendary jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon, a seven-time Grammy nominee – and now an author, with a new memoir called “Beneath the Skin of Sorrow: Improvisations on Loss.” It’s about Freelon’s own experience with grief, following the deaths of her husband Phil and her sister Debbie within a few months of each other – and how the lessons of jazz music and the creative life have helped her cope.
Visit Nnenna.com for more on Nnenna Freelon and “Beneath the Skin of Sorrow.”
The book is out now, from Duke University Press, and Duke’s Nasher Art Museum is hosting an evening with Freelon on Thursday, October 23, from 6-8 p.m.
