Description

Fighting along the Thailand–Cambodia border has left Thai villages near the frontier badly damaged and largely deserted. Residents describe frequent Cambodian rocket fire, which they say is inaccurate but frightening and relentless. Thai artillery responds throughout the day, while civilians shelter in bunkers amid ongoing shelling. One villager was killed by shrapnel while trying to reach safety, with locals saying there was no warning. The violence has forced communities to flee repeatedly as attacks resume with little notice. The clashes are rooted in a long-running territorial dispute centred on the Preah Vihear temple. That dispute has militarised the border since 2008 and has now escalated into renewed warfare. Al Jazeera’s Jack Barton reports from Sisak Province, Thailand.
