Has the second wave of feminism improved women’s status in Japan? Chizuko Ueno discusses achievements and failures of the last 40 years, as well as the lingering effects of the March 11 Fukushima nuclear disaster and current nuclear politics, with a special focus on how these issues relate to women.
A sociologist by training, Professor Ueno is one of the leading feminist critics and public intellectuals in Japan. She is the author and co-author of more than 50 books that address issues of the family, patriarchy, gender, capitalism, and nationalism.
