The 6 Types of Working Genius w/ Patrick Lencioni
Update: 2022-09-21
Description
Today on the Montgomery Companies Podcast, we are joined by one of America’s most influential thought leaders on the topics of organizational health and leadership development – Patrick Lencioni. Patrick is the host of the podcast “At The Table,” and author of 12 books with over 7 million copies sold – some of which include The Ideal Team Player, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, The Motive, Getting Naked, and his newest book – The Six Types of Working Genius.
We begin this episode with a deep dive into Patrick’s model on the six types of working genius, based on the undeniable truth that those individuals and teams who utilize their God-given talents are the most successful. When team members are not allowed to function in their working genius, their performance is suboptimal and we make judgements about them, assuming that they don’t care about their work, or that they just aren’t that smart. The whole team feels frustrated and stuck. On the flip side, when we and our team members are allowed to lean into our individual geniuses, we get twice as much work done in half as much time and find joy in doing it. Which scenario would you prefer to work in? Join us as we dissect the principles that define each type of genius and discuss how teams can learn how to function optimally by each team member engaging in their areas of genius.
We wrap up the episode with an exploration of Patrick’s book The Motive, examining the important differences between a reward-centered leader, and a responsibility-centered leader. Patrick cuts to the heart of leadership, encouraging anyone who finds themselves in a leadership role to assess their own motives in order to become someone who leads for others, not for themselves.
