When you chat with a narrator such as Ian Salvestrin, you suddenly find yourself diving into the stories he tells with that contagious enthusiasm. We at The Pass met him at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli on the occasion of the ACI Racing Weekend, an event that Ian attended as WSK Promotion’s commentator for the Italian F4 Championship. Throughout our Track Talk, Ian shared thoughts, emotions and anecdotes collected during his life on racetracks around the world, highlighting the privileges and responsibilities that come with his profession. 

The Australian begins to express his passion for motorsport at the wheel of go-karts and, after several years of racing, turns it into his job. The lack of hunger for victory as a driver translates into the constant motivation to excel as a commentator, driven by what he himself defines as an obsession. Inventor of famous nicknames for drivers, including the future champions of Formula 1 as well as of other categories, he tackles his professional challenges with tenacity, developing a conflictual relationship with mistakes and focusing both on the capacity to calibrate words and on the task of bringing viewers close to the action, which Ian told us about. 

Currently working on the final part of another season with WSK Promotion, mainly narrating international karting and Formula 4 after also being official event commentator at the Formula 1 Pirelli Gran Premio d’Italia 2024, Ian teaches that the love for your job naturally coincides with the aptitude to do it to the best of your ability.

Noi di The Pass lo abbiamo incontrato al Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli in occasione dell’ACI Racing Weekend, evento al quale Ian era presente in veste di commentatore dell’Italian F4 Championship per WSK Promotion. Nel corso della nostra Track Talk, Ian ha condiviso pensieri, emozioni e aneddoti raccolti nella sua vita tra le piste di tutto il mondo, mettendo in luce i privilegi e le responsabilità che derivano dalla sua professione.

L’australiano inizia a esprimere la propria passione per il motorsport alla guida dei go-kart e, dopo diversi anni di gare, la trasforma nel suo mestiere. La scarsa fame di vittoria che aveva da pilota si traduce nella costante motivazione a eccellere da commentatore, spinto da ciò che lui stesso definisce un’ossessione. Inventore di celebri soprannomi per piloti, tra cui i futuri campioni della Formula 1 così come di altre categorie, affronta le proprie sfide professionali con tenacia, sviluppando un rapporto conflittuale con gli errori e focalizzandosi sia sulla capacità di calibrare le parole sia sul compito di portare gli spettatori vicino all’azione, di cui Ian ci ha parlato.

Attualmente impegnato nella parte conclusiva di un’altra stagione con WSK Promotion, raccontando principalmente il karting internazionale e la Formula 4 dopo essere stato anche commentatore ufficiale dell’evento al Formula 1 Pirelli Gran Premio d’Italia 2024, Ian insegna che l’amore per il proprio lavoro coincide naturalmente con l’attitudine a svolgerlo al meglio delle proprie possibilità.
