Heaven's Gate was an American religious cult founded in the early 1970s by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles. The group became infamous in 1997 when 39 of its members committed mass suicide in a rented mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, California. This tragic event shocked the world and remains one of the most well-known mass suicides in modern history.
