Another great Cold War spy thriller from Edward Wilson
Although it stands well on its own, it helps to have read The Envoy first because some of the characters and action are continued from the earlier book. New action and players add different perspectives and additional information to Kit Fournier's story - The Envoy of the first book. We are also introduced to a new character - British SIS agent based in Berlin, William Catesby. Most of the action takes place in East and West Berlin where, in the years before the Wall, movement between the two sectors was relatively unhindered.
With everyone spying on everyone else, and as another reviewer has mentioned, the difficulty of distinguising information from disinformation and those will support you from those who will betray you makes makes reading this novel a bit like walking on eggshells - you never know where the next bomb or bullet will land and who will be left standing at the end.
The Darkling Spy
A tautly woven espionage novel set during the Cold War. This is quite a dense read, nicely atmospheric for the time period and has some excellent characterisation. I have to say that I found the second half of the book more compelling, events moved at a much faster pace. The plot is multi layered and complex which I enjoyed and I also enjoyed not being certain of who really were the "good guys.".
I'll read more novels by this author, I like their style.
Not buying it (the plot that is)
Spoiler Alert.
Seriously? British Intelligence kidnapping the station head of the CIA? The book progresses and if the point of the book is to point out the moral ambiguity of those in the 'intelligence community', then the author does a great job. Until the end where it becomes bizarre in the extreme. The main character, Catesby, is not given a second by the author to reflect on the death of the woman that saved him or the unsure future of the sister he professes to love so much. However, if all you want is America bashing, sometimes overt and sometimes with thinly veiled contempt, then this book is for you. And all this is supposedly set during a time when British Intelligence had more holes in it than a spaghetti strainer. But hey, Catesby the unapologetic socialist, is true to Britain to the end. At least Philby, Maclean and the other traitors were probably following their true beliefs.
Exciting page turner
it was a very exciting page turner and it kept me guessing throughout the book. A very nice way to enjoy a plane flight!

Avery well written early cold war spy story. This book is above and beyond most because it intelligently gives the story in a narrative that favors neither side. Very well done. A must read.
