Even knowing it was coming, my husband and I still gasped at the end of the show. That shield used in anger and vengeance, and then stained with blood... My goodness, it just struck our hearts. I'm a fan of the MCU, but I never considered myself particularly a fan of Cap. Now I know that even if I didn't love Steve, I loved what he stood for. A symbol of hope, justice, equality, and peace -- I didn't realize what Captain America's shield meant to me until I saw it sullied. I hope John gets smacked with a big, heavy bag of karma bricks.
