</figure>As we explore the First Noble Truth, the Truth of Suffering, we will consider the story of the Buddha’s Disciple Upali, who was born into the servant (Sudra) caste and served the royal Sakya clan as a barber. The Buddha, who was born into the ruling (Ksatriya) warrior caste, rejected the caste system and welcomed Upali into the Sangha.
This episode from the life of Sakyamuni Buddha illuminates the Buddha’s teaching that birth itself leads to suffering.
