Publisher's Summary:
The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth is a science fiction novel by H. G. Wells, first published in 1904. Wells called it "a fantasia on the change of scale in human affairs.... I had hit upon [the idea] while working out the possibilities of the near future in a book of speculations called Anticipations (1901)." There have been various B-movie adaptations. The novel is about a group of scientists who invent a food that accelerates the growth of children and turns them into giants when they become adults.

Members Reviews:
Really pleased to read this book. One of Wells' best and most currently relevant.
I picked this book for my 12th grade Brit Lit class to read, since all of them pretty much knew Time Machine, War of the Worlds, etc. Especially nice was the current cultural references to genetically modified food. The book doesn't seem out of date at all. Well-written. The students loved it, and were surprised to enjoy "old stuff." I loved it. Great stuff. We had many interesting discussions.

Excellent
I love this book. Front-loaded with wit, dialect, and humor, then philosophically and socially charged through the end. The way Wells represents the conflict between tradition and modernity is thoughtful and balanced, and his view of the human project is awesome.

It was still a fun read that I recommend
The setting takes place in England around the early 1900s, and knowing something about that area would probably have endeared the story a bit more. It was still a fun read that I recommend.

Like picking up a book you read as a child ...
Slightly juvenile. Like picking up a book you read as a child and really like, and reading as an adult and realizing that it is not as awe inspiring as it was then.

Not as good as remembered
We;;s has a fabulous imagination and a real narrative flow, but this is not one of his best. In this case my three stars says "It's OK," but not more than that. He didn't really bother to work through the plot and did not integrate the various facets of the narative. All in all, disappointing by the high standards of HG Wells.
