Description
This was a big week on the Pacific Crest Trail… Andrew got a trail name! As you know, Andrew likes to sing. Unfortunately, his favorite time to sing is while he’s hiking and out of breath. So now he will forever be known by fellow hiker-trash as
“Off-tune”… Congratulations Andrew!!
Off-tune and Youngbeard hiked 124 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail—from Big Bear to Wright Wood—with Paradise, Merman, Blue Beard, and Muck Tuck. The trail was hot and filled with plenty of adventure. We stopped by the Deep Creek Hot Springs, a wonderful place and a hippies paradise for sure, and spent the day splashing in the water. Our group stayed all day, beating the heat, leaving the springs at dusk to avoid the sun. (I highly recommend checking out Deep Creek Hot Springs).
A playful day segued into a long, difficult night-hike. We wanted to do a night-hike under the full moon, but didn’t expect it to be as challenging and tiring after a day spent frolicking in the sun. In the night everything looks different. Our minds turned every shadow into a monster and every twig snapping into the boogie man. We stayed close together and hiked fast. Around 1 AM, after 5 exhausting hours, we finally decided to set up camp.
In the morning we were amazed to be right on Silver Wood Lake—what a treat! We were tired but managed to push on. McDonald’s iconic golden arches were within reach, and all of us were drooling over the idea of burgers and fries. It didn’t take us long to get there but we did sit around eating for the better part of the blistering hot day. Most of us put down a healthy, adult-amount of calories in one sitting, but Blue Beard “took the cake” with 3700 calories in one meal…. holy &@%#.
This week we had Merman and Muck Tuck on the show. Merman was on last week (Irish dude) and Muck Tuck is the Canadian. We had a glorious stay in Write Wood. We fell under the beer-and-burger spell instead of salad-and-Gatorade, but we didn’t seem to mind. Off-tune had a bum foot and a new trail name, so we took a zero to celebrate and hope to push on to Agua Dolce.
