00:03:18
More to come next time, but for now, let's get into the story.
00:03:29
This is the story of when a boy named Rocky was given something remarkably similar to one of his sister's craft kits.
00:03:36
His sister Navarra probably owned at least ten different craft kits.
00:03:39
She was constantly making crafts.
00:03:41
And if for no other reason than it being an activity his sister liked, Rocky had decided long ago that he was not interested in crafting.
00:03:49
His uncle Jay, who had given him the gift, explained that it wasn't for making crafts.
00:03:53
It was for creating inventions.
00:03:56
See?
00:03:57
It says right here on the box, "ultimate inventors kit."
00:04:01
Rocky had seen the name on the box, but couldn't get past the picture of what was inside.
00:04:06
Pom-poms, popsicle sticks, tax and pipe cleaners among other things.
00:04:11
Basically everything Navarra used in her crafts.
00:04:14
"Bro, are you gonna need all of those popsicle sticks?"
00:04:18
she asked, because I am running low.
00:04:20
Also, I'm almost out of glitter, so if your invention kit comes with glitter, that would be just great.
00:04:27
Rocky knew about all sorts of different inventions.
00:04:30
His teacher was constantly talking about inventions that had changed the world.
00:04:34
Things like the light bulb, the telephone, and even the wheel.
00:04:38
The Rocky's teacher never told them about any famous inventions made using glitter.
00:04:43
"Maybe you could invent a new style of friendship bracelet," said Navarra excitedly.
00:04:49
Rocky rolled his eyes.
00:04:51
He then politely thanked his uncle, but in his head pictured the perfect place to store the ultimate inventors kit, hidden away under his bed for the next 20 years.
00:05:01
As he was leaving the room, his uncle Jay said something that made him stop in his tracks.
00:05:07
"You know, Rocky, you remind me of your great-grandfather.
00:05:11
That's why I bought you this gift."
00:05:12
"Did you know he was a famous inventor?"
00:05:15
"That's right.
00:05:16
He invented something that millions of people around the world still use today.
00:05:20
I've always had a hunch that you'd follow in his footsteps.
00:05:24
Perhaps someday you'll invent something incredible like nothing the world has ever seen."
00:05:30
Rocky had no idea.
00:05:32
How was this the first time he was finding out about his great-grandfather being a world-class inventor?
00:05:37
"I can totally see Rocky becoming a famous inventor," said Navarra, "maybe he'll invent something that stops himself from acting like a smelly cheeseball."
00:05:48
Rocky stood tall and said, "If anyone needs me, this cheeseball will be done in uncle Jay's workshop developing the next greatest something.
00:05:57
If you thought the television was a good invention, just you wait."
00:06:02
From upstairs, Uncle Jay and Navarra could hear a lot of commotion coming from the basement workshop, clinking and clanking sounds, popping and bopping noises.
00:06:11
And was that the sound of a drill?
00:06:14
Was Rocky even old enough to use a drill?
00:06:16
Maybe not, but sometimes an inventor's got to do what an inventor's got to do.
00:06:22
This was the sound of something new and incredible coming together.
00:06:26
At breakfast the next morning, Rocky finally emerged from the basement.
00:06:31
Not realizing her brother had been down there the whole night, Navarra almost spit at her mouth full of fruity hoops.
00:06:36
"It's not morning time already, is it?"
00:06:39
asked Rocky, wiping away some sawdust from his brow.
00:06:42
"Rocky, you just pulled an all-nighter," explained Uncle Jay.
00:06:47
"That is such a world-class inventor thing to do.
00:06:50
I knew I was right about you."
00:06:53
"Look, Uncle Jay," said Navarra, getting even more excited, "he's holding it, his invention, the next big thing, ooooh!" "Show us, boy,"
00:07:04
said Uncle Jay, "what is the new invention of yours that will soon become world-famous?"
00:07:10
Rocky held up, but he'd spent the entire night working on.
00:07:13
"So, as you can see, this is not the invention.
00:07:18
That's not ready yet.
00:07:19
This is just my pre-invention, the invention before the invention."
00:07:24
In Rocky's hands was a sign made out of popsicle sticks, pom-poms, and a whole lot of glitter.
00:07:29
It read, "Inventor at work, do not disturb."
00:07:33
"Yeah, so I figured I could put this on the door to the workshop.
00:07:37
That way, while I'm working on my invention, people will know not to bother me.
00:07:42
World-class inventors like me do not like being interrupted while we work on our famous inventions.
00:07:47
This sign was a necessary first step."
00:07:50
As he spoke, two popsicles sticks and three pom-poms fell to the floor.
00:07:54
Both Navara and Uncle Jay looked relieved to know this was not the grand invention, and while they couldn't make sense of how the sad little sign took him the entire night, they only knew they had to trust Rocky to do his thing.
00:08:07
Later that morning, Rocky met up with his friend Wescott at the park.
00:08:11
Wescott often brought his dog Clifford to the park on weekends.
00:08:14
"Hey, Wescott, my buddy, old pal," said Rocky, walking up to his friend.
00:08:19
"Notice anything different about me today?"
00:08:21
He asked.
00:08:25
"Wescott looks rocky up and down."
00:08:27
"Yeah, you do look different," he admitted.
00:08:28
"You've got the eyes of someone who hasn't slept."
00:08:32
Rocky pulled out a pair of sunglasses to cover his eyes.
00:08:35
"Okay, yeah, but not like that.
00:08:37
Didn't you notice that I looked like a super genius soon to be famous world-class inventor?"
00:08:42
Wescott looked at his friend again.
00:08:44
"Actually, now that you mention it, you do.
00:08:48
I can tell just by the way you're standing."
00:08:51
Clifford the dog barked at Wescott as if to say, hurry up and throw the stick already.
00:08:56
"Wait, you can actually tell just by looking at me?"
00:08:59
Rocky asked.
00:09:00
"No, of course not," answered Wescott.
00:09:03
"You just look like a tired cheese ball."
00:09:06
Rocky told his friend about the gift his uncle had given him and how his great-grandfather had been a famous inventor.
00:09:12
He also explained that his uncle had predicted he was going to follow in his great-grandfather's footsteps.
00:09:17
"Say, that's actually really cool, Rocky," said Wescott.
00:09:22
"What was the invention your great-grandfather came up with?"
00:09:26
Rocky wondered why this wasn't a question he had thought to ask last night.
00:09:29
He only knew it was something used by millions of people.
00:09:33
Wescott thought about this.
00:09:34
"Okay, but there's an awfully big difference between the invention of the car and the invention of the toilet brush, you know?
00:09:42
Both are used by millions of people, but only one of those things you'd want to be famous for."
00:09:48
Rocky told Wescott he'd check with his uncle.
00:09:51
Wescott then asked what Rocky's invention was going to be.
00:09:54
It was a reasonable question to ask, but Rocky hadn't thought of anything yet.
00:09:59
As a super genius soon to be famous world-class inventor, he figured he should have at least one idea ready to go, so he quickly came up with something right there on the spot.
00:10:08
"Oh, you're going to love this idea, Wescott, so my first invention is going to be a stick-throwing machine.
00:10:16
It'll throw sticks for people's pet dogs, so they don't have to.
00:10:19
All that stick-throwing you do over and over again?
00:10:23
Who's got time for that?"
00:10:24
"Oh, and the best part?
00:10:26
It's powerful enough to throw sticks as far as the moon, so if you need a nice long break from your dog while you're trying to play with your best friend, you can, you know, just have your dog fetch a stick from the moon.
00:10:36
That should chew up more than a few minutes."
00:10:38
The more Rocky imagined his amazing idea, the more he considered how to improve it.
00:10:43
The stick-thrower is also going to have a built-in Bluetooth speaker, he continued, that way we can listen to stories at the park.
00:10:51
"Oh, and it will be able to make any drink you want, any flavor, any color.
00:10:56
And did I mention it can also turn us invisible when we're playing hide and seek?"
00:11:01
Wescott's mouth was hanging wide open.
00:11:04
Even Clifford had stopped chasing sticks and was staring at Rocky in disbelief with his head tilted sideways.
00:11:09
"Rocky, you actually know how to build that?"
00:11:14
As Wescott, who was very impressed by the supergenius standing in front of him.
00:11:18
"Oh, no, of course not," answered Rocky, "that part is up to the factory to figure out.
00:11:25
Building people's inventions is what they do."
00:11:28
Wescott couldn't believe a supergenius didn't know the most important thing about inventing stuff.
00:11:33
"Rocky, you can't just dream up something impossible and then expect a factory to make it happen.
00:11:39
You have to be able to show the factory how to repeat what you've already done.
00:11:43
You have to build the first one yourself."
00:11:46
Rocky tried to play it off like he already knew that.
00:11:48
"Well, yeah, obviously I was going to make the first one.
00:11:52
Why do you think I have a special sign for my workshop?"
00:11:55
Speaking of which, I better get back there now.
00:11:58
Lots of inventing to do today.
00:12:00
No time to waste at the park.
00:12:03
As Rocky made his way home, Wescott continued throwing sticks for Clifford, wondering how on earth his dog was ever going to retrieve a stick from the moon.
00:12:12
Back in the workshop, Rocky was kicking himself or not telling Wescott the best part.
00:12:17
His stick-throwing machine was also going to include a mechanism to throw donuts for kids to fetch.
00:12:23
Hanging his new sign in the workshop door, he began thinking about all the parts and materials he'd have to gather for his invention.
00:12:30
This time, he was going to need a whole lot more than some pom-poms and glitter.
00:12:35
From upstairs, Navara and Uncle Jay spent the rest of the day wearing noise-canceling headphones to block out the horrible racket coming from the workshop.
00:12:44
Rocky was up to something big down there, and they could not wait to find out what it was.
00:12:50
Nearly three weeks passed before Rocky had finished his invention.
00:12:54
He'd have done it in half that time if it weren't for the three most annoying things loathed by every world-class inventor, eating, sleeping, and school.
00:13:04
Rocky invited everyone he knew for the big reveal, including the internet.
00:13:08
"Okay, everyone.
00:13:09
Is the video on?
00:13:10
Has the livestream started yet?
00:13:12
Can I begin?"
00:13:13
"All right.
00:13:14
Here we go."
00:13:15
Friends, family, people of the world.
00:13:19
Behind this red curtain is something unlike anything you've ever seen before.
00:13:23
I'm about to show you something that is going to revolutionize the way people do stuff.
00:13:29
That's right.
00:13:30
It'll be one great big revolution of stuff doing.
00:13:33
When I started this project three weeks ago, I had a vision, a vision to create the world's greatest stick-throwing machine.
00:13:40
Well, that vision got thrown in the trash before the end of day two, but not because it was impossible, as inventors choose not to use that word.
00:13:48
Instead, I have made something even better, because as far as I'm concerned, those dogs should be throwing their own sticks.
00:13:56
Rocky turned around and pulled back the red curtain between him and his invention.
00:14:00
"I present?"
00:14:02
"Oh, crumble.
00:14:03
I think I forgot to come up with a name.
00:14:06
How about for now?
00:14:07
We just call it prototype 5-3-1-4?"
00:14:10
Sounds sophisticated.
00:14:11
Anyway, I'm now ready to take any questions.
00:14:16
Most people watching were too shocked to say anything.
00:14:19
Westcott eventually went first.
00:14:22
"Rocky?
00:14:23
Is that a thing?
00:14:25
It looks like, uh, I don't even know.
00:14:28
What is it supposed to do?"
00:14:31
Rocky wondered why his friend was asking such a question, wasn't it obvious?
00:14:35
"Alright, so this piece of scrap wood right here holds up some nails that can do, well, all sorts of things, really.
00:14:44
And on this side you'll see some Velcro.
00:14:46
People use Velcro for lots of stuff, but never like this.
00:14:51
And as you can see on top, there's a motor from Uncle J's lawnmower attached to the compressor from his air conditioner, which reminds me, Uncle J, you're going to want to buy a new lawnmower and air conditioner,
00:15:02
apparently they won't work without these parts."
00:15:06
After a long and comfortable silence, people started to realize Rocky was waiting for an applause.
00:15:11
A few people gave him a very slow clap.
00:15:15
My new invention goes on sale Thursday, but don't delay.
00:15:18
I only built 50 of them to start, and they're going to go fast.
00:15:23
Everyone in attendance ran to the nearest exit, wanting to check if their lawnmowers had been dismantled for any of these other units.
00:15:30
Days later when not a single person had called or knocked on Rocky's door, he said, "I don't get it, guys.
00:15:36
Did I tell everyone the wrong day?"
00:15:40
Wescott wanted to let his friend down easy, but Novara just came out and said it.
00:15:44
"Your invention stinks, bro.
00:15:47
Like, what actually is that thing?
00:15:49
What are people even supposed to do with it, huh?
00:15:52
I can't even picture a cheeseball like yourself making use of it."
00:15:56
Wescott tried to soften the blow.
00:15:59
"I mean, it's certainly cool that you figured out how to put all of that stuff together into one big sump then or other.
00:16:06
Not every day you see a lawnmower engine next to some random Velcro."
00:16:11
But deep down Rocky knew the truth.
00:16:13
He just didn't want to admit it.
00:16:15
"I'm sure lots of inventors start out like this," suggested Uncle Jay.
00:16:20
"I'm sure your great-grandfather's famous invention didn't happen on his first try."
00:16:25
"Uncle Jay," began Novara, "you never told us which cool invention our great-grandfather actually made."
00:16:33
The look on Uncle Jay's face expressed he was hoping they'd never ask.
00:16:37
"Well, you know, it might not seem that cool to you guys, but it's something I've used before along with millions of other people.
00:16:46
Some of the most seemingly simple inventions are still quite remarkable when you think about it."
00:16:50
Novara interrupted and told her Uncle to spit it out.
00:16:54
"Okay, well, your great-grandfather is the inventor of the Toilet Brush, okay?
00:17:00
Keeping Toilet's clean since 1932."
00:17:03
Rocky stood up and left the room.
00:17:05
He then sat alone in his workshop doing a whole lot of nothing.
00:17:09
Of all the famous inventions, why did his great-grandfather have to be the one responsible for the Toilet Brush?
00:17:15
He could have invented a donut truck or the boomerang, but no.
00:17:19
He went with Toilet Brush.
00:17:21
Rocky appreciated having a clean toilet, but still.
00:17:26
At school the next day Wes got tried to lift his friend's spirits.
00:17:29
"Hey, man, it's not important what your great-grandfather invented.
00:17:34
What's important is that he solved a really serious problem.
00:17:37
Who knows what those Toilets looked like before he came along?"
00:17:40
"Rocky, your great-grandfather had something special.
00:17:44
The mind and spirit of an inventor.
00:17:47
And I believe you have it, too.
00:17:49
Someday you'll discover a problem to solve and you'll have millions of people thanking you for your invention, even if it's not as cool as a donut truck."
00:17:59
Rocky felt fortunate to have such a great friend, and Wes caught was right.
00:18:03
Just because his great-grandfather invented something weird didn't mean he had to.
00:18:08
He had the one thing that mattered, the mind and spirit of an inventor.
00:18:14
For the coming weeks Rocky spent every waking moment searching for the perfect problem to solve.
00:18:19
Problems like Corn always getting stuck in your teeth.
00:18:22
There had to be a better way.
00:18:23
Or how about the problem of sisters calling their brother's cheese balls and getting away with it?
00:18:28
There had to be a better way.
00:18:30
And what was up with having to go to school for five days only to get two days off?
00:18:34
Certainly, there had to be a better way.
00:18:38
But no matter how many annoying problems he came up with, Rocky couldn't think of any inventions to solve them.
00:18:44
He wondered how his great-grandfather would have tackled these problems.
00:18:48
He didn't know his great-grandfather's methods, but he knew someone who might.
00:18:53
"Um, Mrs.
00:18:54
Giggle Baker?
00:18:55
Do you have a minute?
00:18:56
I was wondering if I could ask you about an inventor I'm curious about.
00:19:00
You know, since you're always talking to us about famous inventors, I'm trying to learn more about how inventors come up with their inventions.
00:19:07
Like once they think of a problem to fix, how do they come up with something that actually works and isn't held together with glue and glitter?"
00:19:15
Rocky's teacher seemed delighted.
00:19:17
"Oh, I just love that you're showing an interest in this.
00:19:21
Now, which inventor were you wondering about?"
00:19:25
Rocky wished he could remember his great-grandfather's name, so he wouldn't have to identify him by his embarrassing invention.
00:19:32
"Well, so, um, I don't want you to think I'm trying to be silly here, 'cause I'm not.
00:19:37
But it's the guy who invented the, um, well, you know, the thing that people used to clean toilets?"
00:19:45
Rocky was relieved to see his teacher wasn't angry.
00:19:47
"Rocky, that's an interesting one.
00:19:50
Did you know the toilet brush was actually invented by accident?
00:19:54
The inventor wasn't even trying to solve a problem.
00:19:57
I remember reading that his son had thrown his wallet in the toilet, and he was trying to fish it out using a stick, because who would want to put their hands in there, you know?
00:20:06
But the wallet kept slipping away from the stick, so he'd try tying a rag onto the stick to give it a little more grip, and it worked.
00:20:13
But then he noticed after getting his wallet back, that the toilet was sparkling clean.
00:20:18
And voila, the toilet brush was born."
00:20:21
"Wait, so he wasn't even trying to invent anything?
00:20:25
No inventor's mind?
00:20:27
No inventor's spirit?
00:20:29
Just a happy and really weird accident?"
00:20:33
Rocky wondered if he was even cut out for the sort of thing after all.
00:20:36
He had not picked up any special talents from his great-grandfather.
00:20:40
It was no wonder Rocky hadn't come up with any grand inventions yet.
00:20:44
This whole thing had been a total bust.
00:20:48
That night, Rocky tied up his uncle's workshop for the last time.
00:20:52
As he turned off the light, he removed the sign he had hung on the door weeks earlier.
00:20:58
Growing up from the basement, Uncle J asked if he had been working on a new invention.
00:21:03
"Not today, Uncle J.
00:21:04
I'm done with that stuff," said Rocky.
00:21:08
He then held up his sign which no longer said inventor at work.
00:21:12
It now read, "Remember to enjoy life."
00:21:16
I spent so much time trying to force an idea for an invention that I missed out on everything else.
00:21:22
After all that time, the best I came up with was a mishmash of random parts stuck together in a way that makes absolutely no sense to anyone.
00:21:30
Think of all the other things I could have done with that time, like bothering my sister.
00:21:35
This sign is to remind me never to do that again.
00:21:39
Uncle J put his hand on Rocky's shoulder.
00:21:42
You know, you may not feel like an inventor right now, but that doesn't mean you aren't.
00:21:48
But you're also right.
00:21:49
You don't have to spend all your time sitting around trying to come up with ideas.
00:21:54
Those ideas come to us when we least expect it.
00:21:57
It might even happen by accident.
00:22:00
Just then there was a loud knock at the door.
00:22:03
It was Wescott shoving a device in Rocky's face.
00:22:06
Rocky, remember how you made a live stream video to show people on the internet the, uh, whatever that invention was supposed to be?
00:22:14
Did you happen to read any of the comments it got?
00:22:17
Rocky hadn't done any such thing.
00:22:19
He barely knew what a live stream even was.
00:22:22
Rocky, you've got hundreds, if not thousands of people wanting to buy whatever that thing was supposed to be.
00:22:29
Look at what this one person wrote.
00:22:30
It says, "I've been waiting for something with random nails sticking out of one side my whole life.
00:22:36
I've got the perfect use for it."
00:22:38
And this other person wrote, "Velcro next to a lawnmower engine connected to an air conditioner compressor?
00:22:44
Genius."
00:22:45
"Wait, a goat, cheeseball?"
00:22:48
It's claimed Navara, but sounds like you're going to need a lot more than 50 of those things.
00:22:54
Rocky turned to Uncle Jay with a glint in his eye.
00:22:58
"Don't look at me with those eyes," warned Uncle Jay.
00:23:01
"My brand new lawnmower is off limits.
00:23:04
Do you hear me?
00:23:05
Off limits."
00:23:07
The end.
00:23:10
That's the story.
00:23:14
And before we wrap up, here's some history for you.
00:23:17
The modern toilet brush was actually invented in the 18th century by a man named William Attis, the same dude who invented the modern version of the toothbrush.
00:23:26
Two brushes you never want to have mixed up.
00:23:29
Question of the week, "Which invention would you love to create?"
00:23:33
That's all I've got for now.
00:23:35
