Publisher's Summary:
One of the first critical studies ever done on the hidden history of Paul Twitchell and Eckankar. It was first completed as a term paper when David Lane was only 20 years old as an undergraduate student at CSUN. Later, it evolved into a very controversial book which caused a worldwide stir in the Eckankar organization.
Contains extensive documentation on how Paul Twitchell created a fictional mythology about himself while denying his association with certain spiritual teachers. Also contains correlations of Twitchell's extensive plagiarism. This is a replica of the 1983 edition.

So what?
Well researched information that is inconsequential. The fact that Paul Twitchel's DOB is uncertain or that his writings resemble other spiritual texts means noting in context to the spiritual awareness he inspired. The fact that this book has been out for forty years with little impact says it all.
Great Investigative Journalism
I first read this material when it was first released in 1979. The current edition is a vast improvement with complete sources that are timely and legitimate. I came away saying, "Yeah. This material is organized very well and flows beautifully. Professor lane did a good job here. I was in Eckankar from 1972 - 1984; followed Darwin Gross in his new venture from 1984 - 1989; then was a follower of the Parent-Line Radhasoami Faith from Agra for a year. I know the subject matter well, so that's why this book speaks to me personally. I left all the Light & Sound Teachings in 1994 and never looked back. I grew up spiritually, culturally, intellectually, and emotionally - but I still have good memories of that phase of my life. I am now a humanist with a small "h."
The Best Reasons to Escape a Cult
I bought this book decades ago and it was an eye-opener to show how much of a cult eckankar actually is. I would presume that a good number of negative reviews on Dr. Lane's book are written by eckists, because they are wont to defend their identification with the cult rather than to look at the truth about it. When you take a close look at eckankar and its self-serving hierarchy, you'll find that it is just one of many such organizations that uses subtle fear tactics and elevate its leaders to the position of gods. (You can easily do a search to find many, many examples of this). Dr Lane's book led me to do a great amount of research to prove for myself that the foundational works of eckankar are largely plagiarized, a fact that is dismissed by eckists as shared information on the astral plane. They have an excuse for all of their criminal behavior, no matter how untenable or insane such excuses are. The people at the bottom of this cult have no idea how corrupt and terrible it is, and they defend it out of their own interests to preserve their egos and bask in their so-called experiences. Thanks to the internet (which was just blossoming when this book was published), people can now do their own research to discover that Dr. Lane's account of eckankar is both true and a gift to those who need to know the truth.
