The Murdaugh family was once one of the most powerful dynasties in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, a legal empire that reigned over the region for nearly a century. Three generations of Murdaugh men—Randolph Murdaugh Sr., Jr., and III—served consecutively as solicitors (district attorneys) for the 14th Judicial Circuit, wielding enormous influence over local law enforcement, the courts, and politics from 1920 to 2006. Their private law firm, Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Detrick (PMPED), became a multimillion-dollar powerhouse that represented the wealthy, the injured, and the politically connected alike. To many in the region, the Murdaughs were the law—a family whose reach extended into every courtroom, sheriff’s office, and small-town council across five counties.


That legacy, however, began to unravel under Alex Murdaugh, the fourth generation to inherit the name and privilege. Behind the façade of Southern gentility and civic prestige, Alex was embezzling millions from clients and partners, battling addiction, and leveraging his family’s connections to dodge accountability. His downfall—culminating in the brutal murders of his wife and son, and the exposure of decades of fraud—destroyed a dynasty that once seemed untouchable. What began as a story of generational power and legal dominance has ended as a cautionary tale about corruption, arrogance, and the rot that grows when one family holds too much influence for too long.
