It's Wednesday, October 30th, and in a month of big speeches, this might have been her biggest.
00:00:05
We start here.
00:00:06
"Good evening America!" With the White House literally over her shoulder, Vice President Kamala Harris tries to seize the momentum.
00:00:16
"I pledge to be a president for all Americans."
00:00:21
This was a prosecutor making a closing argument, so what does it tell us about her strategy down the stretch?
00:00:26
Meanwhile, former President Trump makes a dueling speech, "I will deliver the best future for Puerto Ricans and for Hispanic Americans."
00:00:34
But if his campaign is felt to drift the last couple days, he does grab hold of a life boat.
00:00:39
And how long could it take to get a winner anyway?
00:00:41
"There's nothing nefarious going on.
00:00:43
It's just a timing of the workload."
00:00:45
An expert walks us through what twists and turns to expect on election night.
00:00:51
From ABC News, this is Stark here.
00:00:54
I'm Brad Milky.
00:00:55
Everybody.
00:01:00
"Every campaign tries to build emblematic moments that they hope will live on in the public consciousness.
00:01:06
Like when you see the candidate in your mind's eye, they want you to picture that event.
00:01:10
I remember Barack Obama spoke outdoors of the DNC one year at a huge football stadium with these kind of Greek columns behind him, very presidential.
00:01:18
"It's time for us to change America,
00:08:08
and that's why I'm running for president of United States."
00:01:26
Donald Trump will always be remembered for coming down a golden escalator.
00:01:29
It is glittering mid-town tower.
00:01:31
"I am officially running for president of the United States."
00:01:38
Well, this week, each campaign is trying to put its stamp on the final week of campaigning with events at iconic locations.
00:01:46
For Trump, it was Madison Square Garden with red cap supporters crowding the streets and subways in Manhattan.
00:01:53
"The results might not have been what he anticipated, though."
00:01:57
"Normally, I don't follow the national anthem, everybody."
00:02:00
Yesterday, Vice President Kamala Harris spoke on the national mall in Washington, D.C.
00:02:06
"Good evening, America!" Speaking within view of the very White House, she wants to govern.
00:02:13
So, what kind of moment was she trying to create and did she meet that moment?
00:02:17
Let's start today with ABC Senior White House correspondent Selena Wang, who was out on the mall for this speech.
00:02:21
She didn't have to walk far.
00:02:22
She's still there now.
00:02:23
Selena, how significant was the speech in the eyes of the Harris campaign?
00:02:27
"Yeah, Brad.
00:02:28
This was a huge sweeping moment for the campaign.
00:02:31
We're exactly one week out from Election Day, and Harris chose not to travel to a battleground, but to stay here in D.C.
00:02:37
and to speak at the ellipse.
00:02:39
The symbolism of this is what's so key."
00:02:42
"We know who Donald Trump is.
00:02:45
He is the person who stood at this very spot, nearly four years ago.
00:02:52
And sent an armed mob to the United States Capitol to overturn the will of the people in a free and fair election."
00:03:03
Vice President Harris, using that to remind Americans the role he played on January 6, and the threat that she believes he poses to democracy, not to mention that the White House was right behind her during her remarks,
00:03:15
so she used that as a way to paint a vivid picture of what the future could look like under her versus Donald Trump.
00:03:21
"I pledge to be a President for all Americans, and to always put country above party and self."
00:03:32
She talked about how this is more than a choice between two parties and candidates, but it's about a choice about a future of freedom versus chaos and division.
00:03:40
"Was this about Trump mainly, Selena, or was this about making her own pitch, or where does that fit in that sort of continuum because she's been asked by various supporters to do one or the other,
00:03:50
right?
00:03:51
Do you have to do both, I guess?"
00:03:52
Yeah, she really leaned into both because at this stage of the campaign, she's running out of time to introduce herself to the American people to tell her what her administration would be about, but at the same time,
00:04:02
her campaign believes that leaning into this anti-Trump message really resonates with voters and some of those more moderate Republicans.
00:04:10
So she made the pitch to Americans that while Trump is focused on his own grievances and himself, she is focused on the issues that Americans care about.
00:04:17
"Donald Trump would deliver tax cuts to his billionaire donors.
00:04:22
I will deliver tax cuts to working people in the middle class."
00:04:26
She went through her plan to lower the cost of groceries of prescription drugs.
00:04:30
"I will make sure you have a chance not just to get by, but to get ahead."
00:04:36
Her plan to create more affordable housing, and she of course pledged to restore reproductive freedoms.
00:04:42
"I will invite to restore what Donald Trump and his hand-selected Supreme Court justices took away from the women of America."
00:04:51
Abortion, a critical issue that her campaign believes is going to turn out people to the polls on election day.
00:04:57
But she also leaned into Trump being unfit.
00:05:01
She argued that he is a danger to democracy.
00:05:03
He calls his opposition, the enemy from within.
00:05:06
And Harris argued that she'd invite those who disagree with her to have a seat at the table that she'd listen to them.
00:05:12
"I pledge to you to approach my work with the joy and optimism that comes from making a difference in people's lives."
00:05:21
The Vice President trying to paint herself as someone who is very practical, solutions-oriented, and would do what it takes to get the job done.
00:05:29
"I don't know how much you're talking to staffers behind the scenes, but I do get a sense that you have lots of democratic voters that are very nervous.
00:05:37
They see Kamala Harris, they go, "Wow, these speeches seem good, but then they look at the polls for each state," and they're like, "Wait, if anything, it's a dead heat or maybe in a few states' advantage, Trump.
00:05:47
Are her staffers in panic mode the same way that a lot of voters are or what's the vibe there?"
00:05:53
I've been talking to sources who are part of the campaign or close to the campaign every single day and look, of course they're nervous.
00:05:59
They say when the stakes are this high, when the polls are this close, of course one would be nervous.
00:06:05
At the same time, though, I am hearing this phrase "cautious optimism" thrown around.
00:06:11
They know that this is a race that's going to be decided on the margins, but they believe that the stronger ground game from the Harris campaign gives them the slight edge.
00:06:20
The Harris campaign has raised more money.
00:06:21
They have an army of volunteers and staff that are knocking on doors, making phone calls.
00:06:26
They believe they're better organized.
00:06:27
They're executing better than the Trump campaign on that front.
00:06:30
The Harris campaign is also aggressively reaching out to independence and moderate Republicans with this argument that Donald Trump is a threat to the fundamental ideals of America.
00:06:40
Harris, of course, has been out on the trail with Republican Liz Cheney and there's a growing list of Republicans, including ones who worked with Donald Trump who've come out and said that they're going to support Vice President Harris.
00:06:51
So they believe they've got a higher ceiling in this race than Donald Trump, but of course they know that this race is extremely tight and it could go either way.
00:07:01
The big night, like you said, is again, there's not that many moments, there's six days, but there might not be, you know, six moments like this left in this campaign, a Selena Wang.
00:07:10
We'll let you get back to the White House.
00:07:12
Thank you so much.
00:07:13
Thank you, Brad.
00:07:15
Now, literally moments after Harris took the stage, Donald Trump went to the mic in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
00:07:22
And what's interesting about Allentown is there are tens of thousands of Latino voters in this part of Pennsylvania who had no doubt heard about the comments at Trump's rally in New York, just a few days prior,
00:07:33
denigrating the island of Puerto Rico.
00:07:35
So let's hit the road with ABC Senior Congressional correspondent Rachel Scott, who's been of a campaign trail with the former president, Rachel.
00:07:41
You actually spoke to former president Trump yesterday, just in a phone call, right?
00:07:44
I mean, how central has this Puerto Rico comment become to the ending stages of his campaign here?
00:07:51
Yeah, Brad.
00:07:52
I talked to former president Donald Trump, just under a week to go until Election Day.
00:07:56
And it really does come at a critical point.
00:07:58
Not only is the election very close, but the Trump campaign is still trying to contain the fallout from the former president's rally at Madison Square Garden in New York over the weekend.
00:08:08
America is for Americans and Americans only.
00:08:11
She is some sick that Hillary Clinton, huh?
00:08:14
What a six son of a you had several speakers on the stage making rude, racist, sexist, bolder comments, including one comedian comparing Puerto Rico to a floating island of garbage.
00:08:27
There's literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now.
00:08:32
Yeah, I think it's called Puerto Rico.
00:08:35
Brad, I asked Donald Trump about that, and he really tried to put some distance between himself and some of those pre-rally speakers.
00:08:41
He told me that he didn't know that person.
00:08:43
He said that, quote, somebody put them up there, I don't know who he is.
00:08:46
And when I asked him about those comments specifically about Puerto Rico, he did not announce them.
00:08:51
He only just kept saying that he did not hear them.
00:08:54
Brad, I will tell you that his campaign is trying to move on from some of these headlines, but Donald Trump just keeps bringing it up.
00:09:01
He did it when I was on the phone with him.
00:09:02
He talked about how big the crowd size was at that Madison Square Garden rally.
00:09:08
And then he did it out on the campaign trail as well.
00:09:10
Politicians that have been doing this for a long time, 30 and 40 years, that there's never been an event so beautiful.
00:09:16
It's like a love fest, an absolute love fest, and it was my honor to be involved.
00:09:21
The former president made multiple stops in Pennsylvania, including in Allentown, which has a very significant Puerto Rican community.
00:09:28
We don't deserve to be caught trashed.
00:09:31
And this man since he's become a president, he's has only talked about hateful stuff.
00:09:38
And Puerto Ricans are a pretty large demographic here in Battleground, Pennsylvania.
00:09:42
The former president has been trying to make inroads with this key demographic and this key group of voters, but you have some allies, including one of Donald Trump's former rivals, Nikki Haley, who went on Fox News.
00:09:53
I mean, this bromance and this masculinity stuff, I mean, it borders on edgy to the point that it's going to make women uncomfortable.
00:10:02
You know, you've got affiliated packs that are doing commercials about Colin Kamala, the seward.
00:10:07
Sounding the alarm about this rhetoric out of Trump rally right before the election and the damage that it could cause to the top of the ticket and down the ballot, too.
00:10:15
Well, so then, if he goes to Allentown, I mean, I don't know if sort of erasing the Madison Square Garden thing is on his mind, but you had, you know, you had protests happening outside.
00:10:24
What did he end up talking about at this rally?
00:10:26
Well, Brad, it was a little bit of damage control.
00:10:28
The former president insisted that he has done more for Puerto Rico than anyone else.
00:10:33
Nobody loves Latino community and our Puerto Rican community more than I do.
00:10:39
And he really tried to make this pitch to Latino and Hispanic voters while also railing against vice president Kamala Harris.
00:10:46
I will deliver the best future for Puerto Ricans and for Hispanic Americans.
00:10:51
Kamala will deliver you poverty and crime.
00:10:54
That's all they can do.
00:10:55
But Brad, there was this interesting moment that happened while the former president was on stage.
00:11:00
Clearly his allies sitting there got wind of comments that President Biden had made about that rally over the weekend.
00:11:08
The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters, his demonizational theme is unconscionable.
00:11:15
The White House insists that the president was only referring to what they called the hateful rhetoric at the Madison Square Garden rally as "garbage."
00:11:22
But the Trump campaign took this to mean something entirely different.
00:11:27
And Republicans were insisting that as Vice President Kamala Harris is preaching this message of unity out on the campaign trail, here you have President Biden, who they thought was demonizing their own supporters.
00:11:41
And so then there was this moment on stage at this rally where Senator Marco Rubio steps up to the microphone with Donald Trump on the stage and reveals to the crowd what President Biden just said.
00:12:03
Biden's team is now saying if you listen to that audio, which was obtained by CNN, you can tell there's an apostrophe in there, like he's saying the garbage is that supporters demonization of Latinos,
00:12:14
like that comedian.
00:12:15
But he cuts off his sentence in such a weird spot that it does sound like he's referencing all Trump supporters in the moment.
00:12:21
It almost reminds me Rachel of Hillary Clinton calling certain Trump fans a basket of deplorables.
00:12:27
Like that kind of hung around her neck for months.
00:12:29
Are we going to see the same thing here?
00:12:31
Brad, I think that was the first thing that came to mind for a lot of people, not only a lot of reporters, but also Republicans who were very quick on social media to respond to this.
00:12:40
Senator JD Vance, Donald Trump's running mate saying this is disgusting Kamala Harris and her boss Joe Biden are attacking half the country.
00:12:48
He said that there's no excuse for this.
00:12:49
I hope Americans reject it.
00:12:51
Well, and literally Rachel, as we were talking to us now, I just saw a donor email from Trump telling supporters, you're not garbage.
00:12:58
I love you.
00:12:59
So clearly trying to capitalize on this, even though he himself has described his opponents as enemies of the state so many times, Rachel Scott.
00:13:07
Thank you so much.
00:13:08
Thanks, Brad.
00:13:10
Next up on Start here, the moment the polls close, people around you are going to be confused about why certain states seem out of whack.

00:15:26
One of the things that made the 2020 election feel so chaotic sometimes was because you had pronounced shifts as ballots continue to be counted.
00:15:34
Michigan with 33% of the vote in, Donald Trump has a lead, Wisconsin 35% of the vote in, Donald Trump has a lead.
00:15:41
All of a sudden, he results from a reliably Republican district, Donald Trump was ahead.
00:15:45
Then his hours went on, ballots were counted in blue counties, and maybe Joe Biden surged into the lead.
00:15:50
Bit of a red mirage factor here, as they open up those ballots, as they process that, those are going to be more democratic votes.
00:15:57
This is why you might remember Trump saying things like, stop the count.
00:16:01
We were getting ready to win this election, frankly, we did win this election.
00:16:07
It came clear that as all the votes were counted, Biden had won in several close states.
00:16:12
Well, this year, even more states are expected to be decided on razor-thin margins, which means that campaigns or even foreign actors could try to show more distrust in voters when it comes time to actually count their ballots.
00:16:25
But this will all seem a lot less chaotic if you know what to look for.
00:16:29
So today, I wanted to bring in someone who's been studying how votes are counted for years.
00:16:32
Michael McDonald is a professor of political science at the University of Florida.
00:16:36
He leads the UF election lab, professor McDonald.
00:16:39
Let's assume everyone's voted on election night, polls are closed.
00:16:42
We often see the thing where it's like 2% of precincts and we're not projecting anything yet.
00:16:46
What sort of complicating factors would make those early numbers not indicative of the full of results?
00:16:51
What kind of twists and turns are you expecting?
00:16:53
Yes.
00:16:54
So we tend to see smaller localities be able to count their ballots and report them faster.
00:17:01
And then larger localities tend to take a little more time because they have more ballots to process.
00:17:07
And so we get this discrepancy where, because Republicans tend to live in more rural areas that are smaller, those ballots may be counted first or reported first.
00:17:19
And then the urban areas may count their ballots or report their ballots later.
00:17:23
So there's nothing nefarious going on.
00:17:25
It's just the timing of the workload that election officials have that leads to the timing of when the ballots are going to be reported.
00:17:33
OK.
00:17:34
This is what I wanted to ask you about because I've heard phrases like red mirage, a blue shift, but that's what you're describing here, right?
00:17:40
When it takes a wild account, mail-in ballots, it looks like one party is way, way ahead.
00:17:46
Yeah.
00:17:47
It really depends on the state.
00:17:48
So some states we have this lead time, Florida, for example, where I live, does have lead time where election officials are already doing all the preparation they need so that they can be out of the gate very fast.
00:18:03
And because we tend to suspect, although this election could be a little different, we suspect that those early voters are going to be more democratic leaning.
00:18:12
We could have a blue mirage and then a red mirage, but then a blue mirage again because election officials are counting the ballots that came back on election day.
00:18:23
And those could be democratic leaning or they may not be.
00:18:27
This election, there are some trends and dynamics that are different than the past.
00:18:31
So the past is not necessarily a good guide as to what may happen with mirages this time around.
00:18:38
Yeah, tell us about that with the early voting especially because four years ago, there was this huge disparity by party, right?
00:18:43
Democrats were all about early voting, they're all about voting by mail.
00:18:46
Republicans were largely told by the president at the time vote on election day and they did, is that going to hold true this year?
00:18:53
Well, we can already see that it's not true.
00:18:57
And Donald Trump has given the green light to his supporters to vote in person early.
00:19:03
Who has voted already?
00:19:06
And we can certainly see Republicans showing up in large numbers to vote in person early compared to any past election that we've seen with the in person early vote.
00:19:16
I think the biggest reason for me being here early was that the Republican party came out and said to do it.
00:19:22
Before 2020, we would have said, oh, yeah, that in person early vote, that's when all the Democrats vote.
00:19:27
I had to be here early.
00:19:28
I have to vote.
00:19:29
I've been doing this since I was 18 and I'm going to do it until I die.
00:19:32
And it's really the mail ballots were Democrats vote, but the pandemic flipped that around.
00:19:38
And so now Democrats are the ones who are much more likely to vote by mail.
00:19:42
Of course, Trump continues to call mail ballots fraudulent.
00:19:46
And so his supporters hear that and they're less likely to use mail balloting in places where there's an option to do so.
00:19:53
So we're setting aside these all mail ballot states.
00:19:55
So we expect, once we get to election day, these trends will generally hold.
00:20:01
But in your mind then, I mean, what is the probability in your mind that we have an answer on election night and what would throw that off?
00:20:07
Well, I mean, it's difficult to say because we still have some more days of early voting to get through.
00:20:14
I do expect some of the patterns that we've been seeing up to this point to shift some.
00:20:19
And I would just say set tight.
00:20:21
I mean, we won't really know at least in terms of the distribution of Democrats and Republicans who voted early until really this weekend.
00:20:30
So I would just be cautious answering that question.
00:20:33
But let's put through some scenarios where, for example, if we're looking at ballots having to be counted still mail ballots in places like Milwaukee or Philadelphia,
00:20:46
we could be waiting a little bit deep into the evening when we're talking about hundreds of thousands of pieces of paper envelopes have to be opened and separated and identification checked over.
00:20:57
So it just takes longer in those big cities.
00:20:59
It sounds like maybe not even like hours.
00:21:01
Could that be days in some areas?
00:21:03
It has happened before that we've seen days.
00:21:07
Maricopa County tells us that they plan to give, they're hoping to give us their final round of results tomorrow morning.
00:21:13
But there are some counties out there that we're not even going to hear from until next week.
00:21:17
Arizona was a very good example of this in 2020 when Republicans who had mail ballots, but they were told you better vote on election day, they held their mail ballots and dropped them off at the polling locations in Arizona as is allowed under Arizona law.
00:21:35
Those late early votes that a lot of Democrats sent in their ballots a lot earlier and the Republicans sent them in later and that the ones that came in on Monday and Tuesday favor Trump by plus 17.
00:21:48
And so Maricopa County, which is where Phoenix is located, was having to count ballots.
00:21:53
And we knew that these were Republicans, they weren't Democrats.
00:21:58
And so actually, if anything, we were looking at a blue mirage in Arizona where Biden had a lead and Trump supporters were outside the convention center,
00:22:09
the county facility and Maricopa County, and they were chanting, "Stop the count!" Wait, Biden was actually leading.
00:22:20
So then they had to change their chant to stop the steal, they figured it out after a day.
00:22:29
Trump lawyers were on the inside, they were watching the count taking place and they needed those votes.
00:22:35
So they were watching very carefully to make sure that they all would be counted correctly.
00:22:40
Alright, strap in, Michael McDonald from the University of Florida.
00:22:43
We'll check in with you after election night to election week or however long this ends up taking.
00:22:49
Really appreciate your insight.
00:22:50
You're welcome.
00:22:51
Okay, one more quick break.
00:22:53
When we come back, we've heard promises that our desks will change our entire health profile, but we're not going to stand for it anymore.
00:23:00
One last thing is next.
00:23:04
I love autumn.
00:23:06
Specifically, I love the food of autumn, right, when everything feels fresh and hearty at the same time.
00:23:11

00:23:46
So ringing endorsement, obviously, from the start here team, had de facto meals.com/start50 and used code start50 to get 50% off your first box plus 20% off your next month.
00:23:59
That is code start50@factor meals.com/start50 to get 50% off your first box, 20% off your next box while your subscription is active.
00:24:12
And one last thing, office technology changes all the time, but one thing that never seems to change is the desk.
00:24:18
Like as long as offices have existed, you sit at your desk, you do your work, but then the standing desk came along.
00:24:25
When she's using her legs to lift up the desk, that's just perfect.
00:24:32
Over the last decade or two, I mean skyrocketing obesity rates and personal trainers saying things like sitting is the new smoking, more and more workers have converted to standing desks.
00:24:42
But there's a growing body of evidence that the best treatment of all may be stepping away from that desk entirely.
00:24:48
A new study this month from researchers in Australia and the Netherlands examined more than 80,000 people and took a look at common diseases associated with circulation.
00:24:57
We're talking heart disease, heart failure and stroke.
00:25:01
But when they looked at people who spent all day standing versus those who spent all day sitting, they didn't see a big difference in those health outcomes.
00:25:08
The sinners had the strongest correlation with those health risks, but the standards also showed a correlation with circulatory issues like varicose veins, ulcers, and blood pressure drops that make you dizzy and light-edited.
00:25:19
Now, I use that word corollary, that means you can't tell a standing all day cause these effects and prior studies have shown health benefits of standing in general.
00:25:28
However, researchers say one thing definitely does help.
00:25:32
Movement.
00:25:33
Quick walks around the office, stretching.
00:25:36
Even moving from standing to sitting, just that motion, can get your circulation flowing differently, which is why those desks that go up and down can be beneficial.
00:25:44
But if the act of standing up, getting your body in motion that makes the difference, not the standing itself.
00:25:50
All the more reason, tell your boss that you don't just need a standing desk, you actually need to take this call while taking a walk outside.
00:25:59
Before I worked in front of a microphone, I had a walking desk at work, and I got steps in like you just wouldn't believe.
00:26:05
Now, I'm so scared to be like ten yards away from the mic in case Rachel Scott calls me into her.
00:26:11
Is it Rachel's fault that I'm at a shape like maybe we can blame her?
00:26:14
