It's weird to realize I actually already read Garrett's first sci-fi novel! It was recommended on Cracked, of all places, where they said it was the unbelievable origins of many modern science fiction tropes, including the ray guns - which were obviously engineered by our boy Edison based on the Martians' artillery-sized death ray!
