Publisher's Summary:
What begins as a quiet day of fishing, with 16-year-old Sven Klakk enviously watching the men using fleygs (fowling nets) to catch birds on the cliffs high above him, ends in a tumult of suspense and terror.
A force 10 gale; a damaged ship in danger of smashing up on the rocks of the island most of the crew call home; a handful of women, old men, and one 16-year-old boy, to rescue the desperately helpless men....
Then, when it seems impossible for things to get any worse than they already are - they do!
Arthur Catherall, a master of suspense, once again skillfully weaves an authentic tale of courage and suspense.

~~ How do the islanders survive the danger that has come to shore? ~~
Two stories start this book:
1. Wreckage from a Scottish trawler damages the 900 ton cod schooner, Faroes Seeker. Its crew were looking forward to docking in the next 12 hours after 6 months at sea. All that changes when the propeller is destroyed thus causing more damage. The nearest Faroes island, Mykines, on which most of this story occurs, is only 50 miles away,
2. Sven, 16, is in the bay fishing with Uncle Aksel watching the men on the cliff top fowling (catching birds for winter food). Uncle Aksel suddenly swats at a grindalokkur (daddy long legs). What's the significance? These are only seen at sea level when there are grind (caaing whales) in the area. There have not been any whales in these parts for many years. Sven has never seen any. Whales mean blubber, meat and income. Watching, they see the whales approaching. Motioning to the men on the cliff, Sven is upset that his uncle will not allow him to go with the fowling/hunting party.
Just 4 old men, Sven and women left on the island due to all the other men having taken all the remaining boats to hunt the whales further north. A big storm comes in thus preventing any rescue boats from attempting to rescue the crew of the Faroes Seeker. When the schooner is finally spotted the following morning, it is drifting towards dangerous rocks. Is there any hope for it and the crew? What's this? Man overboard? Can "he" reach shore? Can Sven help? Oh my! What a surprise!
This is the start of a fast paced, suspense filled, dangerous adventure for the folks on the island. You won't want to put this down. EXCELLENT! I read this aloud to our family and everyone loved it. Purchasing this for my Kindle, I was not required to write a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz
Excellent back then, excellent now
I first read this book in the mid-1960's, having ordered the book through Scholastic Books at school. I remember being absorbed by everything in the book...the thought of living on an island, climbing rock walls, the ocean, the strange intruder, the way in which the islanders worked together to solve the problem. My original copy got lost somewhere in the midst of various moves and just getting older. On a whim, after reading my youngest daughter's most recent Scholastic Books order form from her school, I researched some of the books I remembered from school days and found The Strange Intruder. As before, I was absorbed by everything in the book...read it in one sitting.
