Description

In the fall of the 1970s, deep in rural Kansas, six children waited each night for their mother to return home from work. One cold October evening, they heard her familiar voice call out from the driveway—soft, tired, and unmistakably hers. Four of the youngest ran outside to help carry in the groceries, but when they reached the end of the drive, the road was empty. Their mother was nowhere in sight. The air turned colder. The oldest, Clara, hurried them back inside and locked every door. They stayed awake until dawn, too afraid to speak. When their real mother finally arrived by taxi the next morning—having missed her usual bus—they realized the truth:

whatever called to them that night sounded like their mother, but it wasn’t her...
