The Voyager Program
Update: 2023-07-27
Description
The Voyager Program is a NASA science experiment that encompasses two unmanned spacecrafts, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. Launched in 1977, the program's initial objective was the exploration of the outer planets in the solar system, including Jupiter and Saturn. As the program progressed, its mission was extended and the two spacecraft generated enough velocity to continue its trajectory beyond the outer planets. The Voyager 1 became the first spacecraft to enter interstellar space in 2012, while Voyager 2 achieved this feat in 2018. The program has been noted for its longevity; the two spacecraft continue to collect and transmit data back to Earth even after 40-plus years in space. The Voyagers carry a unique cultural aspect as well, each equipped with a "Golden Record" containing images, sounds, and music representative of Earth and humanity, intended potentially to be received by any extraterrestrial beings the spacecraft might encounter. As of now, the two spacecraft are billions of miles away from Earth, continuously augmenting the boundaries of human exploration.
