Against a backdrop of hotter summers, rainfall events caused by climate change, and rapid urban expansion, officials are being prompted to rethink the way that they manage Berlin’s water resources.


We spoke to Dr. Darla Nickel from the Berlin Stormwater Institute about her role in promoting discussions about new methods for stormwater management. She explains that, historically, Berliners have had a very “heightened awareness of the value of the resource of water.” During the time of the Berlin Wall, West Berlin extracted groundwater from within the city limits in order to maintain its independence.
