Thrift Stores Boom, Returns Drop
Update: 2025-12-26
Description
Post-Holiday Shopping: Thrift Stores Thrive as Traditional Retailers StruggleThe Christmas shopping season has concluded, with spending reaching new heights. However, economic uncertainties and tariff-induced price hikes are prompting shoppers to rethink their purchasing habits. Thrift stores and discount chains are seeing a surge in popularity, with traffic up by nearly 11% in the week before Christmas. Traditional department stores and clothing shops, on the other hand, are experiencing a decline. This shift is particularly challenging for retailers, as clothing and electronics, typically popular holiday items, are struggling despite increased demand. Shoppers, even those from higher-income households, are embracing second-hand finds due to cost concerns and environmental worries. Thrift store traffic has risen by over 10% since the second half of the year. Returns are down so far, with shoppers being more deliberate in their purchases. Online sales, however, have seen a 6% increase to $187.3 billion. A significant return spike is expected between December 26th and January 15th.
