Whilst understanding how to engage pupils might help you understand where you’re working, Traci Mathena, gives us her first-hand experience of making the jump from her Alma Mata to Principal at a Baltimore elementary school. As an educator in her second career, she has worked to cultivate a passion for learning in her students from her first career– Journalism. Starting life as a reporter, that focus in her first career is an approach to leadership that has not changed. She talks to Mylena about how she builds teams, collaborates with her staff, and emphasizes the importance of strong communication and empowerment.
