TransAlta Converts Coal Plant to Natural Gas in Washington
Update: 2025-12-10
Description
TransAlta Corporation and Puget Sound Energy have agreed to convert Washingtons last coal-fired power plant, Centralia, to natural gas. This move aligns with a 2011 legislative agreement, reducing emissions by about fifty percent. The sixteen-year contract provides seven hundred megawatts of power until 2044. However, concerns about potential power shortages during the energy transition have led to support for natural gas as a temporary backup, with officials viewing it as a practical, short-term solution to manage the transition towards a clean energy future.
