Tuesday Tea with Homeboy Industries' Marcos Luna
Description
Marcos Luna just celebrated his birthday last month and is now 11 years clean and sober. He is a Veteran Staffer at Homeboy Industries and began as a trainee on September 17, 2007. He grew up in the San Gabriel Valley and attended several high schools without completing his GED due to his affiliation and participation in local gangs. He was arrested in 1994 and released in 1998. He returned to prison upstate in the same year from 1998 until his release in 2006.
It was through a Drug Diversion and Reintegration Program that he discovered Homeboy Industries. Since 2007, he had his body tattoos slowly removed, got “clean” in 2013 and discovered the joy and kinship of running in community through Back On My Feet and Homeboy Running Group. Currently he works tirelessly during regular business hours as well as an on-call basis to meet the needs of HBI and Father Gregory who he refers to as “Dad”.
Marcos has many essential roles, and he fulfills them with compassion and humility. He is mentioned several times in Father Gregory Boyle’s books as a significant contributor to the mission of Homeboy Industries. He is father to three children and lives nearby in Downtown Los Angeles. He is a regular participant in the Homeboy Monday 5k after Homeboy Industries closes. Today on the pod, he celebrates the wisdom and skills he has learned over the past 17 years and lives in gratitude since his release from state prison.
