Publisher's Summary:
"The year 1866 was signalised by a remarkable incident, a mysterious and puzzling phenomenon, which doubtless no one has yet forgotten.... For some time past, vessels had been met by 'an enormous thing', a long object, spindle-shaped, occasionally phosphorescent, and infinitely larger and more rapid in its movements than a whale."
When Professor Aronnax agrees to investigate a series of attacks by a mysterious sea monster, he begins an incredible underwater journey that leads him from Atlantis to the South Pole. Through unforeseen dangers, surprise encounters, and exotic settings, this epic adventure is a tour-de-force of imagination and narrative grandeur. Jules Verne was remarkably successful in foretelling the wonders science held for the future. This, his most famous novel, earned him the title of "Father of Science Fiction."

The binding is nice, but the pages look like a cheap photo ...
Not what I was expecting at all. The binding is nice, but the pages look like a cheap photo copy.
Five Stars
no need to mention. still great
Tons of detail, not a good choice to read aloud
I think this was probably fascinating when it was written, but my son and I have been reading it, and it seems like Jules Verne opened an encyclopedia and copied pages and pages from it. Perhaps not a good read aloud book for that reason - if you could skim all the lengthy descriptions to just pick up the gist, then it would be probably be better.
